Safety On The Road- It’s All In The Tires

The tires of your car are the only parts of your vehicle that is in contact with the road. All the weight of the vehicle - kerb weight and passengers included is on those four tires. The power and torque generated by the engine are made available through the transmission at the tires.

So the tires have to be able to take all that comes its way - slush, water, heat, adverse road conditions, etc and yet keep its traction at all speeds, keep the stability of the car while cornering without slipping, keep the ride comfortable and make sure that the braking is sufficient to avoid any accidents.

Safety on the road is entirely dependent on the tires! If they fail, it could be devastating if not fatal.

Tires tend to lose grip when they are old and worn out, and when they are not inflated to the right pressures. Underinflated or overinflated conditions can cause the tire not to deliver.

None of the other car systems will work if the tires are not performing at their optimum level. Their performance parameters like good road grip, wet grip, and aquaplaning/hydroplaning can be optimum if and only if certain key tire aspects are well maintained and checked regularly.

It would be best if you always were on the lookout for these signs of wear on the tire, as these will most definitely hamper car’s drive performance.

  1. Over-inflated tire - if you check for tread wear on your tire and they are unevenly worn out, especially more worn out in the center then, it is due to over inflation.
  2. Underinflated tire - If your tires show more wearing out in the outer edges and less at the center, this is because of underinflation. Uneven wearing out of tires reduces the road grip and thereby compromises safety.
  3. Misaligned tires - If your tires show wear on one edge even when inflated to the right levels, then the problem could be with their alignment. Misaligned tires are a safety hazard as they hamper the braking and reduce the tires road grip.
  4. Unusual vibration or thumping noise - this indicates an out of balance tire.
  5. The vehicle pulls to one side - This happens when the tire gets busted or punctured. It could also occur with the misaligned tire when the brakes are applied.

Apart from these, you could also follow simple tire maintenance routines regularly for proper tire care.

Rotate the tires
A front wheel drive vehicle’s front tires tend to wear out much more quickly than the rear tires, as the power and torque are transmitted to them and that adds on to their loads. Similarly, other variations of drive trains also wear out the tires unevenly. Hence, it is advised to rotate the tires - switch their places so all tires can wear out evenly and maintain the road grip.

Wheel alignment and Tire Balancing
Wheel alignment is done not so often as tire balancing, Uneven wear changes the distribution of load on the tire and throws it off balance, and this could cause vibrations in the car and make the right uncomfortable. Tire balance is checked every time they are rotated or for every 9000kms or 6 months.

Whereas, wheel alignment is done to align the car’s wheels to the manufacturer specified position. Aligning the wheels will include checking for uneven wear that indicate misalignment. Wheel alignment is usually done for every 15000kms and is advised to be done before embarking on a long journey.
